The Plateau University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened an indefinite strike over the failure to implement the 2025 agreement between the federal government and the union. The union said the state government has not fulfilled its obligations under the pact, particularly in paying salary adjustments and academic staff allowances.
Dr Vincent Choji, chairperson of ASUU at Plateau University, issued the warning during a press briefing in Jos. He cited prolonged delays in honoring the agreement as the primary reason for the planned industrial action. "The continued delay in implementing the agreement has pushed lecturers to the limit," Choji stated, according to a report by Vanguard News.
The union's frustration stems from the non-payment of entitlements agreed upon in 2025, which were meant to address long-standing welfare and remuneration concerns. Daily Trust reported that ASUU described the state government's inaction as a breach of the federal agreement. The union gave no timeline for when the strike might begin but emphasized that further delays would trigger immediate action.
Plateau University authorities have yet to issue a public response. The university, a state-owned institution, faces mounting pressure to resolve the impasse and avert a shutdown of academic activities. ASUU has previously suspended teaching at various Nigerian universities over similar disputes.
